"We also learned about the history of kites. Did you know that kites have been used for over two thousand years? That was how long ago people in China started to use silk and bamboo to make the first kites. Around the same time, people in the islands of the Pacific Ocean used leaf kites for fishing. The kites helped them catch fish that were far away or would get scared by a boat. They would attach a line and hook to the tail of the kite and fly it so the bait dangled in and out of the water. People still use kites for fishing today."
Spring Flower ShowMarch 26 through April 24, 2011
Phipps' annual Spring Flower Show showcases the beauty of spring gardens and celebrates wind, earth's most ethereal element. Seven indoor gardens feature tulips, daffodils and other spring favorites along with kites, sailboats, mobiles and other playful wind elements. Phipps celebrates wind not only for its beauty but also for its function as a sustainable power source. As part of its dedication to green building practices and sustainable operations, Phipps purchases enough wind energy credits to offset 100% of its electricity usage campus-wide.
